I can't believe no one I've seen has called out the secret game! Go to Settings>About and then hold the center button for 5 seconds. I used to play so much of this bricks game in college when procrastinating from studying in the library.
Digging into it just now, an important distinction I initially missed is that they worked on the original arcade cabinet (all game logic implemented directly in hardware), which predated the 2600 and its software version by several years (by which time they had already founded Apple).
I saw an interview where someone asked woz about getting screwed out of a lot of the Atari money It was apparently new information to Woz, and he simply deflated a little, and muttered "not again, Steve..."
That’s not what he said in the video. He said he found out 12 years later in a book. So sometime in the mid-1980s. That book is "Zap! The Rise and Fall of Atari" by Scott Cohen. The quote is "Jobs earned himself a five-thousand-dollar bonus." on page 55.
I started coding in 1981 on an VC20, learned a lot from it, but wonder how did the world benefit more from vic20s?
As a happy smartphone user, I think the world did benefit a lot e.g. from the Newton (loved mine, dropped a Palm for it, sad it died, but it was too heavy).
The world got more benefit because it was kids like us who learned on these Commodore machines who rose in ranks in the tech world in the 1990s and laid the groundwork for products like the Palm Pilot, the iPod, and the iPhone.
With Woz at the helm he would have worked on the Apple II architecture until the company went down, same fate as Commodore which didn't drop the Amiga and Atari which didn't drop the ST.
Without Jobs there never would have been an Apple Computer Inc. Woz would have been a kickass HP engineer and its very likely not many would know his name.
Amazingg! I never owned an iPod, so this is my first chance to experience it, I had forgotten that I'd seen all those videos where you navigate using the wheel instead of the buttons
Really is heartbreaking that the click wheel is such an incredible and satisfying user interface but technology has evolved such that we have no need for it anymore.
We do still need it. Any time to need to scroll through any extremely long list in order to find a single particular item, the scroll wheel beats the manual binary search of scrollscrollscroll... too far... scrollscrollscroll back... too far... etc.
I would, unironically, use a device that had that iPod interface as a music device until my dying day. Make it only able to stream from Apple Music, make me load up songs through USB -- I'll do it.
I have a logitech mouse that allows you to unclick the scroll wheel so you can scroll at tremendous speed (the scroll wheel has a bearing). I highly recommend this both because it's surprisingly useful and because it's incredibly satisfying.
The only problem with this scroll wheel is that the clicked mode does not actually guarantee a scroll event per click. There is a disconnect between the mechanical click and the actual event sensor. This is usually a non issue but if you try to use the scroll up/down as a bind in a game (fps jump for instance) it becomes painfully obvious.
Oh and also scroll click isn’t a thing (but there is the middle button to bind)
For normal work I absolutely love the unlocked flywheel scroll and won’t go back
Another problem is that applications that try to implement smooth scroll for wheel events will actually drop events or screw up the animation, making the unlocked scroll useless or just as slow as normal.
There are tampermonkey/userscripts that can block websites from ever receiving the scroll events. They also exist for blocking overrides of native keyboard shortcuts. User CSS styles can block other methods of scroll fuckery.
It's not (most) websites that do this, but the browsers and applications themselves. Games are also notorious for it. It's possible to configure it in some cases (like in Firefox), but in others it's just built-in and there's no knob.
Smooth scrolling for wheel events works fine in Firefox on Linux, speed and all. I have such a momentum wheel Logitech mouse. (I almost always leave the clicks engaged, the wheel can still keep going for quite a distance if flicked hard enough.)
The one that uses a semi-permanent magnet for that mechanism? It's the only use I'm aware of a switchable permanent magnet (alnico and rare earth half-cylinders wrapped in a coil; pulsing the coil switches the alnico to be either parallel or anti-parallel with the neodymium, turning the whole assembly on or off) in a commercial product; I bought it just for that.
I’ve used G502 mice for a decade now and the scroll wheel is central to how good they are. The MX Master mouse also has this but instead of a mechanical clickclack it has a button that switches an electropermanent magnet or something to enable/disable the free spin mode. It’s witchcraft.
I’m still rocking my OG first gen MX Master today, 11+ years and counting of daily backpack tossing, having survived 3 MacBooks and at least 7 chargers. My only secret? I bought a $10 padded case for it on Amazon the very first day I had the mouse, and zip it in there every time before it goes in my backpack.
Everything works as new, the only thing that broke is the plastic covering the gesture button.
I use AHK to bind XB2 (the top side mouse button) + scroll to scroll fast, I agree that it is very useful. I got inspired by VS Code using alt+scroll for fast scroll and wanted that everywhere.

It's literally one of the "big prick" items of Job's history, along with disowning his own child.

With Woz at the helm, Apple would have gone the way of Commodore and Atari, it's a good thing he got out.

An Apple that made little more than the AppleII and ran it's course would have been a perfectly fine thing.
We would all be far richer for having 20 different companies in place of the Apple we got.

Though it's cute that it's the 404 page, you can get to the page directly via https://music.apple.com/us/ipod.

It sounds like you are talking about the style in the MX Master, which is electromagnetic and controlled via software.
They also have a physical version in the M720. I do not know how the mechanism works, but it is controlled by a mechanical switch on the mouse.

Yeah, I've had one for few years now. It was always annoying to accidentally unlock the scroll wheel...
> so you can scroll at tremendous speed (the scroll wheel has a bearing)
...but I never once gave the unlocked scroll wheel a whimsical flick until I read this part.
I learned a thing! It works great. Thanks!
